After pregnancy, major weight loss or simply with time, the abdomen can remain loose, overhanging or protruding. And sometimes exercise alone simply cannot change it enough.
The problem is not always just fat. It is often a combination of excess skin, a weakened abdominal wall, diastasis recti and localised fat deposits.
Abdominoplasty – commonly known as a tummy tuck – addresses what the body can no longer tighten on its own. It removes excess skin, reshapes the abdomen, can tighten the abdominal wall when needed and is often combined with liposuction so we can shape not only the lower abdomen, but also the waist, flanks and the overall silhouette.

What a tummy tuck actually changes
Think of the abdomen after pregnancy or major weight loss as fabric that has been stretched significantly.
You can lose fat. You can strengthen your muscles. But excess skin often cannot shrink back enough on its own.
During abdominoplasty, the surgeon removes excess skin, reshapes the abdomen and, when necessary, repairs the abdominal wall. If diastasis is present, this can also be addressed during surgery.
The goal is not simply to remove skin. It is to create a flatter, firmer abdomen that fits the proportions of the rest of your body.
What about diastasis recti?
Diastasis recti is a separation of the abdominal muscles that can make the stomach continue to protrude even when there is not much fat.

Tummy tuck alone, or tummy tuck with liposuction?
If the main issue is excess skin, abdominoplasty alone may be enough.
But if fat remains in the upper abdomen, waist or flanks, combining the tummy tuck with liposuction can make more sense. In that case we are not only treating the overhang below the navel – we can shape the whole midsection.

Full abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck is mainly suitable when the problem is smaller and limited to the lower abdomen below the navel.
If there is more excess skin, looseness above the navel, diastasis or a need for more extensive abdominal wall repair, a full abdominoplasty is usually more appropriate.
What about the scar?
Yes, a tummy tuck leaves a scar. It is one of the most common concerns before surgery.
The good news is that the surgeon places it very low, so it is usually hidden under underwear or bikini bottoms.

At first the scar is more visible, but over time it usually fades, softens and becomes thinner. Once well healed, it can often become a fine pale line that is hidden in ordinary underwear or swimwear.
The final appearance of the scar depends on healing, skin quality, genetics and how carefully the postoperative instructions are followed.
What is life like after a tummy tuck?
A technical description of the operation is one thing. What the change means in everyday life is another. In this video, one of our patients talks about her experience, recovery and what life is like after getting rid of the abdomen that had bothered her for a long time.
What does recovery look like?
- Hospital stay: usually 2 nights.
- First few days: the abdomen feels tight, swelling is normal and you will move more carefully.
- First 12–16 days: a quieter routine and reduced physical activity according to your surgeon's instructions.
- Exercise and heavier physical activity: usually after around 6 weeks.
- Final result: the abdomen continues to settle and the scar continues to mature over the following months.
When is the right time for a tummy tuck after pregnancy?
Changes after pregnancy are among the most common reasons women consider abdominoplasty.
Around one year after giving birth is ideal. We generally recommend waiting at least 6 months so the body has time to recover and stabilise. If you are still breastfeeding, actively losing a significant amount of weight or planning another pregnancy soon, the timing should be discussed with the surgeon individually.
Who will perform my tummy tuck?
Several of our plastic surgeons perform abdominoplasty at Formé. Each has slightly different experience and strengths, so we choose the surgeon according to the individual case, the extent of surgery and what needs to be addressed.
A smaller correction may call for a different approach than significant diastasis, a large skin overhang or a tummy tuck combined with more extensive liposuction.

How large will the scar be?

How long will I need off work?
Allow around two weeks for a quieter routine. The exact time depends on the extent of surgery and the type of work you do.
Can I become pregnant again after a tummy tuck?
Yes, but another pregnancy can change the result. If you are planning another pregnancy in the near future, it is worth discussing the timing of surgery first.
How do I know whether I need a tummy tuck or only liposuction?
If the skin is still firm and the main issue is fat, liposuction may be enough. If the skin is significantly loose or diastasis is present, abdominoplasty is more likely to be needed. We can often give an initial opinion from photos.
